The Faculty of Law, Manipal University Jaipur is pleased to announce the Fourth Law Scholarly Lecture by Prof. (Dr.) Anup Surendranath on Perspectives from an Indian Law School on Defending Death Row Prisoners: The Project 39A Story and the Imagination of Legal Aid which shall be held on 21st February 2025. Prof. (Dr.) Anup Surendranath is Professor of Law, at National Law University, Delhi and Executive Director of Project 39A: A Criminal Justice Programme. Dr. Anup Surendranath holds S K Malik Chair Professorship on Access to Justice at NLU Delhi and is member of Advisory Council of the Bonavero Institute of Human Rights, University of Oxford.

Project 39A is a criminal justice initiative celebrated for its empirical research and outstanding contributions in sentencing procedure, the prison system, legal aid, mental health and forensic science. The project has been instrumental in transforming ground realities by providing legal aid and pro bono representation of death row prisoners across India, particularly in Central Prisons of Pune and Nagpur. The advocacy of the project has led to significant legal reforms by the Supreme Court. The remarkably researched reports under the aegis of this project such as Annual Statistics Reports, Forensic Science India Report (2013-2017), Death Penalty and the Indian Supreme Court (2007-2021), Death Penalty India Report 2016, Death Penalty Sentencing in Trial Courts etc. are widely cited by judgements of Supreme Court, Law Commission, parliamentary debate and United Nations.

The Law Scholarly Series is an initiative of Faculty of Law, Manipal University Jaipur, as a part of its decennial year celebrations, providing a platform for legal luminaries to engage in contemporary discourses with Ph.D. Research Scholars, Under-Graduate and Post-Graduate students, and faculty members.
