Expert Lecture on 3-D Radio Coverage Tool for Mission-critical Operation

Department of Computer and Communication Engineering organised an Expert Lecture Expert Lecture as part of the course "Wireless Communication" on 5th March 2019. Prof. Rafael Caldeirinha, Polytechnic Institute of Leiria, Portugal was invited as the keynote speaker. Prof. Rafael (Fellow Member IET and Senior Member IEEE) was born in Leiria, Portugal, in 1974. He received the BEng (Hons) degree in Electronic and Communication Engineering from the University of Glamorgan, UK, in 1997. In 2001, he was awarded a Ph.D in Radiowave Propagation by the same University for his research work in vegetation studies at frequencies from 1 to 62.4 GHz. He is currently Head of the Antennas & Propagation (A&P-Lr) research group at Instituto de Telecomunicações, Leiria, Portugal, and Coordinator Professor in Mobile Communications at the School of Technology and Management (ESTG) of the Polytechnic of Leiria, Portugal.

The title of his talk was 3-D Radio Coverage Tool for Mission-critical Operations in Highly Dense Forest Areas Under Wildfire Environments - the Portuguese RESCuE-TOOL Project. Following the forest fires that devastated most of the Portuguese forest landscape last summer, coupled to the emergency communications system recovery failures, this keynote addressed the current research work on radiowave propagation phenomena in rural areas, particularly under wildfire environments.

More than 72 students of second and third year of SCIT and SEEC attended the talk.
