Guest Lecture on Echoes of Past: Retelling of Mythology in Contemporary Narratives

The Department of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, Manipal University Jaipur, organized a guest lecture titled “Echoes of Past: Retelling of Mythology in Contemporary Narratives” on 5 August 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The session was organized for the students and faculty of the Department of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences.

The lecture was delivered by Prof. Kalpana Purohit, Former Dean, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and Former Head, Department of English, Jai Narain University, Jodhpur; Member Syndicate and Director, Centre for Women’s Studies.The session explored how ancient myths continue to remain relevant in contemporary literature and popular culture. Prof. Purohit discussed how modern writers and media reinterpret traditional myths to present new perspectives, particularly by bringing marginalized and lesser-heard voices to the centre. The lecture also examined the adaptation of mythology into contemporary forms such as young adult fiction, graphic novels, streaming series, and video games.

A lively Question-and-Answer session followed the lecture, encouraging active participation and intellectual exchange among the attendees. The event concluded with a Vote of Thanks by Dr. Archana Sharma, followed by the circulation of feedback forms.
