Professor Sangwan holds a PhD from Birla Institute of Technology and Science Pilani (BITS Pilani), M.E. and B.E. from Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh. He is the recipient of the prestigious Shri B. K. Birla and Shrimati Sarala Birla Chair Professorship for his contribution to teaching and research.

Professor Sangwan has held various administrative positions at BITS Pilani – Unit Chief of Workshop and Placement Units, Head of Mechanical Engineering Department, and Assistant Dean of Engineering Services Division.

He has been a visiting researcher at the Technical University of Braunschweig, Germany on multiple occasions. He has travelled across the globe to participate and present his research on environmental assessment at UNSW Sydney, Purdue University, University of Twente, NUS Singapore, Tokyo University, TU Berlin, DTU Copenhagen, Rutgers University NJ, Politecnico di Torino, etc. Professor Sangwan established international collaboration with Technical University of Braunschweig, Germany through competitive projects sponsored by DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) and industry. Since 2011, this collaboration has sponsored more than 100 undergraduate, postgraduate, and research scholars for cross-campus visits.

Professor Sangwan, with his infrastructure planning and development knowledge, has established a new central workshop at BITS Pilani with the state-of-the-art facilities for teaching and research. He has also established Joint Indo-German Experience Lab (Learning Factory) at BITS Pilani in collaboration with TU Braunschweig, DAAD, and FESTO to improve engineering education against the backdrop of experiential learning. He has also developed an advanced measurement lab with the help of industry. The facilities developed by him at sustainable and life cycle assessment lab are availed by researchers all over India for the environmental assessment of products and processes.

He is a fellow of the Institution of Engineers (India), and life member of Indian Institute of Industrial Engineering, International Association of Learning Factories, and Society of Operations Management. Professor Sangwan also served as editor-in-chief of Industrial Engineering Journal (2021-23). His name regularly features in the Stanford University curated list of top 2% world scientists in the domain of Automation and Industrial Engineering.
