Three important challenges facing the developing countries in the Asia region are

• the rapid growth of industry and infrastructure, which requires ever increasing numbers of skilled engineers
• the difficulty of the local universities to keep up with the demand for high quality engineering education
• the shortage of domain-specific postgraduate porgrammes to provide "hands-on" training to the graduates.
