American educator Harold Howe once said, “What a school thinks of a library is a measure of what it feels about education.” If you go by the libraries at Manipal Jaipur University (MUJ), you will see that we believe the same.
MUJ campuses are where we teach students to do well academically, and become citizens of the world. Students embarking on the journey of knowledge and learning will find no end for their quest here. This is one of the reasons why we have not one but three state-of-the-art libraries on campus. At the moment, our libraries house over 42000 books of which over 37000 are in the Central Library. The campus has a separate library for the Law department that houses about 12000 dedicated books. The FoD library, too, has over 5000 books. With an additional 8000 plus books added across all libraries each year, we constantly try our best to bring in all the latest volumes that will be useful to students.
Our collection comprises rare books, journals, reports, theses across physical and electronic formats. Everything we do at MUJ is aimed at transcending the confines of a pure classroom education, and likewise, even our libraries do not hold just academic material. Students are free to issue several fiction and non-fiction books and journals that are unrelated to their academic coursework. The ones passionate about reading can even join a very popular literary club; they can regularly get together with members of the faculty to discuss literature and new literary trends.
We even host two book fairs on campus each academic year where faculty members, research scholars and students come together to recommend the books they would like to see included across all the libraries. We then go about adding them to our shelves.
A vast collection of resources like this takes a lot of upkeep and maintenance, and we bring in the very best personnel and technology to keep it in order. The Faculty-Advisor Library and Library Advisory Committee (LAC), that has members from each department at MUJ, are involved in the quality of the campus libraries. They are also actively involved in planning new initiatives centred around keeping the libraries modern such as implementing RFID tags, facilitating remote access of e-resources. Additionally, they also put their heads together to come up with ways in which the e-books and e-journals collections can be strengthened, drawing up plans to extend the library space in order to accommodate more resources and services, and creation of the latest digital archive.
Rest assured, students will not be left wanting for any research material. MUJ believes that its students deserve the best resources and teaching aids to soar, and our libraries are just another extension of this belief.
