The future refineries have set a goal of achieving net carbon zero emissions by directly producing chemicals from crude oil without producing any fuels. In this aspect there is an immediate need to nurture the young engineers who can able to respond flexibly to the challenges posed in the refineries in a holistic manner. The new B.Tech Chemical Engineering with specialization in Petroleum Engineering particularly focusing on the mid- and down-stream operations providing strong fundamentals. It also provides the necessary skills required to be able to take up the challenges associated in a Petroleum sector in various aspects such as improving the efficiencies and economics, de-carbonization, retrofitting new and emerging technologies in the existing refinery complexes.
B. Tech. (Chemical Engineering) with specialization in Petroleum Engineering offers a better and wider opportunities to work in Petroleum/Petrochemical Industries. The course offers a specialization in Petroleum Engineering with particular focus on oil & gas processing, Petroleum refining and Petrochemical production processes. This specialization course enriches a graduate Chemical Engineering student with new advancements in the field of Petrochemical industries making them industry ready. The goals are aligned with the Govt. of India’s Make in India thereby encouraging not only the professional skills but also entrepreneurship among the students.
Petroleum derived products are omnipresent, and today’s global economy is mostly dependent on these petroleum prices. Mankind is totally dependent on these petrochemicals
that are key raw materials for several applications such as plastics, synthesis of key pharmaceutical drugs, agriculture sector, automobile industry, textiles and many more sectors. Thus, with increasing electrification of transportation sector, the refineries of the future are aimed at net carbon zero emissions and converting crude to chemicals. Industries, these days, demand a specialization in a particular field besides the fundamental knowledge. A specialization in petroleum engineering will benefit the students keeping in view the rapid shift in the petroleum refineries to improve profitability and the need for Make In India mission to be sustainable and self-reliant.
In addition to the chemical engineering principles, skills are essential to meet the expectations of industry and society. To serve the society with better quality and safe products, focus is now on upgradation of existing processes and new technology development. The current focus on petroleum engineering may strengthen and create better opportunities for the graduates of Chemical Engineering.
Oil & Gas Processing: Students shall gain knowledge in the mid-stream operations involved in the exploration of oil & gas and transportation to the refinery.
Petroleum Refinery Operations: Students shall gain knowledge in the conversion processes of crude to fuels and solve petroleum industry related problems.
Petrochemical Production Technologies: Students shall apply the skills in the development of new/better technology to meet the petrochemicals demand.
Catalysis in petroleum industry: With the concepts of catalysis, students shall effectively develop/synthesize a catalyst to resolve the problems related to technology development.
Admissions are done based on rank in the Manipal Entrance Test (MET).
Petroleum Engineering is gaining interest these days with emphasis on petrochemical production as future refineries are moving towards direct conversion of crude to chemicals. Besides the chemical engineering principles, this specialization course shall make the students industry ready with enhanced technical skills to apply in any area of chemical engineering such as process plant operations, design, and optimization. The faculty members of the department have great industrial experience and expertise in this area.
The candidate must have passed 10+2 or A Level or IB or American 12th grade or equivalent examination with Physics, Mathematics and English as Compulsory subjects, along with any one of Chemistry or Computer Science or Biotechnology or Biology or Statistics or Engineering Drawing as optional subject for admission to B Tech, with minimum of 50% marks in Physics, Mathematics, and the optional subject, put together.
MUJ provides students with an environment conducive to learning and imbibing knowledge to make them industry ready."
