Program Details - Bachelor of Arts (Hons) English

Overview

B.A. English (Hons.) at Manipal University Jaipur is a widely designed programme to study art, culture and ideas which have shaped the world as we see it and the world that will be. The study of literature in English at Manipal is comprehensively thought of and covers a vast array of works from the literary canons. The aim of the course is to create critical thinkers who are sensitive to the cultural and social changes taking place around them and have the literary training to go deeper into the cause and effect of the vivacious dynamism in the contemporary world. The creativity that students develop in their strong writing skills and the variety of genres that they closely study, make them relevant to multiple career opportunities as they venture out, armed with the language and critical knowledge of world literature. The programme gives deeper understanding of multifarious cultures along with training in literary theories imperative for analysis of literature. The courses facilitate exposing students to the ever thriving cultural industry and helps them get avenues for exciting careers in  teaching, media, writing for film and T.V., creative writing etc. 

 Equipped with the latest digital and software technology, the advanced language labs are an amalgamation of software, specially designed sound cards and personal networks which promote seamless learning, and facilitate language acquisition from its rudimentary basics to advanced doctoral research. 

OBJECTIVES

  • To understand the history of British Literature and other literatures in English in terms of major periods and selected authors
  • To identify and define major genres of literature
  • To recognize, define and apply formal terms in literary texts
  • To understand selected literary and linguistic theories for the aesthetic evaluation of literature
  • To understand diverse strategies of textual interpretation appropriate to different literary genres
  • To appreciate diversity of literary voices drawn from different social/cultural backgrounds.
  • To nurture and develop in students creative skills and the power of imagination
  • To strengthen students’ linguistic capabilities and communication skills through practical sessions in the Language Lab
  • To develop basic research skills and the ability to communicate ideas effectively in writing

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

  • This program provides students with an excellent education in literature, drama and film. Taught by accomplished scholars, the degree combines a flexible approach and a wide range of options with extensive historical coverage
  • There are also opportunities to practise creative writing and theatre and to make films or join a work placement in one of the regional cultural industries. However, our principal aim is to deepen students’ knowledge of literary texts and give them a firm foundation in the critical and theoretical skills needed to analyse them
  • The students have the chance to gain valuable work-related experience by undertaking a work placement in one of the cultural industries. This is an exciting opportunity to relate the knowledge and skills they have acquired to the work environment, as well as enriching their CV.
